Session: Holistic Learning for the Future of Work

Research has demonstrated that the rapid change in technology has changed the way we acquire, retain and process information. The way we work and learn has changed, are you ready? Since the pandemic, corporations, industries, and employees have had to re-imagine and adjust to a new way of being.

The pace of global and technological change requires a mindset of continuous, lifelong learning. At the same time, it’s no longer good enough to simply understand the technical skills required of a job; a combination of both technical, business and people skills are critical for evolving your team(s) and your own career. Now more than ever it’s important to take a holistic approach to learning by creating journey experiences. Learning is not transactional and to keep up with the pace of change and uncertainty, it’s important to provide a roadmap for learning. In learning environments, there’s a lot of focus on developing the “right technical skills” which captures the knowledge of the person in that moment in time. What happens when they are under stress or if they don’t apply those skills through exposure and experience over time? When we focus on the right technical skills for that moment, we miss the opportunity to continue to grow and evolve the skills, expanding our capabilities into new areas. The future of learning is understanding the whole person behind the learning and providing a roadmap, support, and blend of skills to set them up for success.

For years I have watched many people struggle to advance their career, even though they have all the ‘right’ credentials. They often felt stuck and couldn’t see a path forward because so much of the learning was transactional or led to a dead end road. They wanted to keep growing, but didn't know how or didn't see a path forward to use those skills every day.

How can we build skills in a more holistic way, rather than focusing on hard skills versus soft skills? How can we see the whole person? How can learning environments adapt so employee development is more effective, especially for the future of work that will require upskilling and reskilling to retain talent, keep employees engaged and grow your talent.

Key Takeaways

  • How to build skills in a more holistic way
  • How employees can adapt to improve development
  • How to be equipped for the future of work
  • How to move from transactional learning to an employee journey
  • How managers can play a key role in learning
